How to Prep Your Gutters & Downspouts for Summer Storms

Summer storm season is almost here in the Twin Cities and if you haven’t started prepping your home exterior for severe weather, there’s no time like the present. One exterior component that homeowners often forget to prep is their gutter system, but neglecting routine gutter maintenance can put your home at risk for storm-related water damage.

When you have some free time this weekend, take a few minutes to follow this simple checklist to ensure your gutters are prepped to handle summer storms

Clean Gutters and Downspouts and Remove Debris

Throughout spring, your gutters can accumulate plenty of leaves, twigs, and other outdoor debris. Once heavy summer rains hit, those gutter troughs must be clean and clear so they can hold as much water as possible and divert it away from your home.

If you don’t remove any existing debris, the gutters will eventually clog and overflow, spilling water near the foundation of your home. Here’s how to clean your gutters quickly and easily:

●        Get a ladder and prop it up against the eave of your roof. It’s in your best interest to use ladder horns to protect your gutters from damage during the cleaning process.

●        Put on a pair of gloves and grab a medium-size bucket, which you’ll use to collect debris.

●        Climb up and use your hands to remove any debris you find inside the gutter troughs.

●        Once you remove the debris, grab a garden hose. Climb back up the ladder and flush the gutters with water to remove any remaining small debris.

If you notice algae or mold growth anywhere along the gutter troughs or around downspouts, clean it off and inspect that area of the roof for water damage. Organic growths often indicate an existing moisture problem, which can grow worse if you don’t tend to it. If you can see soffit or fascia deterioration, get it repaired before summer rains have a chance to make it worse.

Inspect Gutter Seams, Seals, and Hardware

Our summer storms often bring high winds along with rain, so you’ll need to make sure your gutters and downspouts can handle it. Inspect all of the fasteners and brackets that secure the gutters to the eaves of the roof, and take a look at seals and seams, too.

If you notice any deterioration, call a gutter repair specialist who can perform a more thorough inspection. If you end up needing gutter repairs or a complete gutter replacement because your existing hardware is badly worn, get the job done as soon as you can.

Trim Large Tree Branches

High winds can easily cause overhanging tree branches to snap off and fall onto the roof of your home, where they can cause serious gutter damage. One of the best ways to avoid the need for premature gutter replacement or serious gutter repairs is to trim back all large, overhanging tree branches near your home. Trimming those branches will also help protect your roof from damage when high winds roll through town.

Consider Gutter Guard Installation

If you don’t have gutter guards yet, now is an excellent time to have them installed. Gutter guard installation prevents debris from entering your gutter troughs and downspouts, which lessens your risk of gutter clogs and overflowing water. If you want serious protection against water-related foundation damage, gutter leaf protection is a great way to help safeguard your home.
