Storm Damage Checklist: What You Need to Inspect After Summer Storms

If you’ve lived in the Twin Cities for a while, you know serious summer storms come with the territory. Those storms have real potential to inflict minor to severe damage around the exterior of your home, and if you fail to detect the damage early, it will inevitably grow worse. To help you stay on top of exterior home maintenance, the storm damage repair experts at Eastern Roofing & Siding have outlined a basic damage inspection checklist below.

Roof Inspection

Since your roof takes the brunt of environmental impacts during a severe storm, it’s important to inspect the appearance and structural integrity of it when the storm passes. You don’t have to climb up on the roof or head into the attic right away (a wet roof is dangerously slippery), but you should examine the structure at your earliest convenience. Here’s what you need to look for:

●        Missing shingles. High winds, heavy rain, and pelting hail can do a number on your shingles. If you notice any are missing, lifted, curling, or torn after a storm, that may be a red flag. Water can easily penetrate roof areas that are not properly protected by shingles, so it’s in your best interest to schedule a professional roof inspection anytime you notice missing shingles.

●        Impacts. Falling tree branches and heavy hail can leave dents and marks in your roof. Examine the roof for signs of impacts and if you locate any evidence, you’ll need to check for interior leaks.

●        Attic. Peer inside your attic for signs of water leaks after a storm. If your roof sustained heavy impacts or other damage during a storm, there’s a chance water made its way under the shingles. If you see water stains or feel moisture anywhere, contact a roofing contractor for a professional inspection right away.

Window Inspection

Window cracks may not be super common after severe storms, but they do occur. Even minor cracks in the glass can allow outside debris and moisture inside your home. And unfortunately, moisture intrusion inevitably leads to mold and mildew growth if the problem is left unchecked.

Moreover, even hairline cracks can quickly expand due to fluctuations in barometric pressure and temperature, which can make a minor moisture problem much worse. If you do find points of impact or cracks in any of your windows, contact a window replacement specialist at your earliest convenience. Depending on the age of your windows, they may still be under warranty, so you won’t have to pay for replacement materials.

Gutter Inspection

Gushing roof runoff, hail, and airborne debris can easily damage your gutters, and if you don’t detect the damage early, you increase your risk of water-related foundation damage. When it’s safe to go outside (the following day is fine), grab a ladder and inspect the interior of your gutters. If there’s a bunch of debris inside, you’ll need to clean each trough to ensure the gutters can drain properly. If you notice cracks, split seams, or anything else out of the ordinary, contact a gutter repair contractor to discuss your options.
