4 Warning Signs Your House Needs New Siding

The siding on your house serves to protect the structure from environmental damage. Ironically, though, those same factors that your siding provides protection against are the very things that deteriorate it over time. UV rays, extreme cold, heavy winds, precipitation, and even pests can gradually or suddenly damage siding, and in many cases, simple repairs aren’t enough to address the problem.

Below, the team at Eastern Roofing & Siding discusses four signs every homeowner should keep an eye out for that indicate the need for new siding installation.

1. Cracks, Holes, and Gaps

Visible holes, cracks, or gaps in your siding aren’t just an eyesore; they can put the structure of your home at risk for serious damage. Compromised siding allows moisture to penetrate beyond the exterior cladding, and if you own a wood-frame house, that could mean trouble.

Moisture accumulation breeds mold and mildew and, if moisture can penetrate the outer cladding of your home, so, too, can pests. To protect your home from the potentially disastrous effects of water damage and critter infestations, new siding installation is essential.

2. Rot

If you can clearly see exterior rot, whether it’s a small area or a massive spread, it’s time for new siding installation. Crumbling siding is also indicative of rot, so if you’ve got disintegrating panels, it’s time to schedule siding replacement.

When you’re dealing with minor siding rot, you may be able to get away with siding repairs by replacing just the affected panels. In most cases, though, rotting siding calls for a complete do-over.

3. Warping or Bulging Siding Panels

Though it can be somewhat difficult to detect, warping or bulging cladding almost always indicates the need for new siding. If your siding panels no longer lie flat, that may be indicative of deeper damage that’s hidden out of sight. If you can observe this issue but aren’t sure whether new siding installation is necessary, contact a licensed siding contractor for an inspection and advice on your best course of action.

4. Interior or Exterior Mold

Can you see mold anywhere along your interior walls? If so, it may indicative of serious siding deterioration or damage that has allowed moisture to penetrate inside your home. But interior mold may also indicate an insulation issue or an interior moisture issue, both of which require prompt attention.

Anytime you see mold indoors, investigate the corresponding area of your home exterior. You should also schedule an inspection with a reputable siding contractor who can readily identify damage and advise you on the appropriate solution.
