5 Signs Your House Needs New Vinyl Siding

Vinyl siding is one of the lowest maintenance exterior cladding materials on the market, but even with diligent care, it won’t last forever. Storm damage, daily environmental exposure, and father time all contribute to gradual vinyl deterioration, and when that deterioration becomes significant, it’s time to start thinking about replacing your siding.

What types of siding damage should you be keeping an eye out for? Check out the most common signs that indicate the need for new vinyl siding installation below.

Mold or Mildew

A bit of mold or mildew on vinyl siding isn’t cause for serious concern in most cases. However, when you consistently deal with black, grey, or white spots popping up on certain areas of your cladding, that may indicate the presence of a deeper problem.

Since vinyl siding can sometimes hide mold and mildew growth that occurs beneath the cladding, those unseen growths can become severe. If that happens, you may notice persistent mold and mildew that just won’t go away no matter how often you clean it up.

If you’ve noticed this issue, call a siding contractor stat. You’ll need to have a professional inspection to assess the severity of the issue and determine the best solution.

Moisture Accumulation Beneath the Cladding

Since vinyl siding isn’t really susceptible to rot, you may not be able to readily see the effects of moisture accumulation that’s happening beneath its surface. But anytime moisture is allowed to sit against the structural materials of your home, it can create serious issues.

How can you tell if there’s moisture beneath your vinyl siding if you can’t see it from the outside? Look for little black or grey flecks around your windows, both on the interior and exterior of your home. Those flecks are an indication of rot, which means the problem has been going on for some time. If you suspect there might be moisture under your cladding, again, call a siding contractor for an inspection. This is not a problem you can afford to ignore.

Severe Fading

Vinyl siding is designed to withstand years of UV exposure, but at some point, its baked-in color will inevitably start to fade. If your siding is considerably faded — or if you have painted siding that’s starting to peel — that’s a good indication it’s time for new siding installation.

However, it’s important to note that vinyl siding actually has quite a long lifespan — up to 40 years under ideal circumstances. If yours isn’t anywhere near the end of its projected lifespan and you take good care of it, you may just need to apply a new coat of paint.

If you notice any warped sections of vinyl, that’s an indication that water has found its way beneath the cladding and caused damage. Without a comprehensive inspection from a siding contractor, that moisture will continue to cause problems, which can grow severe without the proper siding repairs or replacement.

Cracks or Holes

If you can clearly see cracks or holes in the vinyl, that’s a surefire sign there’s some degree of water damage beneath the cladding. While siding repairs might solve the issue temporarily, the best way to protect your home from further damage is to opt for new siding installation.
