Three Common Winter Roofing Problems

Between the bitterly frigid temperatures, the high winds and the precipitation of all types that we get around here, your roof can really take a beating this time of year. Here are some of the most common reasons that homeowners request a roofing contractor from us during the winter season.

Condensation

When warm air hits a cold surface, condensation forms. If your home does not have adequate insulation or a good attic ventilation system, this condensation will seep through and down into your home, causing a variety of problems like mildew and mold. It can also freeze and unfreeze, causing the wood and other roofing materials to expand and contract. After awhile, those materials might end up compromised, which means you will need to call a roofing contractor for repairs or for a whole new roof.

Icicles

Icicles are pretty to look at, but they can be dangerous – especially if they are hanging off of your roof or gutters! You don’t want to get hit in the head by one of these. Icicles form in the same way that ice dams form. Not only that, if the icicles are particularly heavy, they can cause damage to your roof and gutters, which means another call to a roofing contractor for help.

Ice Dams

This time of year, we are especially prone to ice dams. Ice dams are when a chunk of ice forms in your gutter and makes all of the water that would normally drain out of your gutter back up onto your roof. Again, this is usually caused by poor insulation: the ice and snow on your roof will melt and drain down into the gutters where it will refreeze and form the ice dam. Ice dams can cause a variety of problems, like a leaky roof and more. This is yet another problem that will probably require a call to a roofing contractor like us.

Keep an eye out for shingles and other roofing materials as you are walking around the outside of your home too. High winds and bad weather can cause your roof to lose shingles.
