Common Roofing Myths

As a roofing contractor in Minneapolis, we often hear our share of roofing myths and misconceptions. So we thought we would take the time address some of the most common ones that we hear.

Myth: You can cover a layer of existing shingles with a layer of new ones.

The best way to make sure that your new roof will not leak and will remain in good shape is by ripping off all of the old shingles before putting the new ones on. The wood sheathing underneath the shingles can rot because of leaks and other damage, so it is best to make sure all parts of the roof are replaced if need be.

Myth: I only need to worry about replacing the flashing when I have a new roof installed.

Your roof’s flashing, which is the metal part that diverts water from vents, pipes and other openings in your roof, should be looked at as something totally separate from the rest of your roof. A roofing contractor from Eastern Roofing & Siding can inspect the flashing on a regular basis to make sure it does not need to be repaired or replaced. The rest of your roof could last you for years, but you might experience a problem with the flashing before or after the rest of the roofing system needs updating.

Myth: The more insulation I have in my attic, the better.

While attic insulation is an important part of keeping your home cool in the summer and warm in the winter, more does not always mean better. If you have more than the required amount of attic insulation, then it can block necessary ventilation openings in your attic and trap in moisture. That moisture could lead to problems with mold and mildew growth, not to mention rotted and warped sheathing.

Myth: I don’t need to have my roof inspected.

A roof inspection by a professional roofing contractor, like the ones at Eastern Roofing & Siding, is a necessity. Not only is long-term maintenance a requirement for many roof warranties, but regular roof inspections could help you save time, money and hassle in the long run. The sooner a roof problem is noticed by a roofing contractor, the sooner it can be fixed.
