8 Questions to Ask Before Hiring a Roofing Company

There are many reasons one might need roof repairs. It may be that the existing roofing has gotten old and is no longer effective, that there have been heavy winds, rain and other elements of nature that have caused shingles to be damaged or blown away, or perhaps there has been a fire or other disaster. Of course, sometimes, you may decide that you just want a different look, and rather than repair several smaller problems, choose to simply replace the entire roof. Regardless of why you may be choosing to have a roofing installation project done, there are several questions to ask before hiring someone to replace or provide roofing repairs. Here are 8 to get you started.

How long have you been in business?

Obviously, the longer the better, as they will have the most experience and knowledge.

What is your approach to how my project will be done?

Answers to this may vary somewhat, but ideally, they should be able to give you a start and end date, let you know who you will be working on your roof, along with an estimate of costs.

Does your company provide insurance and workers compensation for your employees?

If a company does not cover their worker’s health concerns, find a different roofing repair or installation company. You don’t want to be responsible for any accidents or injuries.

Do you need a permit for the roofing project?

This will vary by where you live. Be sure to find out what your city/town requires. A qualified roofing repair and installation company will know the answer to this; in fact, many of them will take care of getting the permit for you.

Can I have a list of your suppliers?

A reputable roofing repair company will be happy to share this list with you. You can then use the list to follow up on cost, delivery, etc. of roofing supplies.

How many projects/jobs like this one have you completed in the past year and may I see them?

You want to know and see that the company can actually do what they say.

How much of your business is based on referral? A reputable roofing company will get at least 50% of their business based on referrals. If the company you are talking to was not recommended by someone you know, you may wish to talk to those you know and get their input, too. Your friends may be able to help you avoid a bad decision.

Do I feel comfortable working with this roofing installation company? This is one of the most important questions to consider. If you don’t feel like the company is good fit for the job you have, then find another. You don’t have to explain your reasoning to the company, it is your home and family and that is the most important factor.
